After pancreas, we went through the GI tract and learned about all types of GI pathologies and specimens. Then in lab we practiced grossing esophagogastrectomy specimens.

We are finishing up the GI block in our surgical and systemic pathology classes. We started the block with pancreas and in lab were able to gross Whipple specimens and distal pancreatectomies. We also had guest lectures from a pancreatic surgeon and surgical oncologist and a medical student pursuing surgery. Pathology and surgery work very closely together so communication and understanding between us and surgery is very important. It was great to hear from a clinical and surgical point of view and discuss how each cut we make directly impacts patient care.

We finished up the GI block this week with liver and gallbladder. In lab we received fresh pig livers. We removed the gallbladders and made our own partial hepatectomy specimens. Eight months into didactic education and our clinical rotations and we are getting to the point where we feel prepared to gross anything! We are comfortable with dictating and grossing and cannot wait to continue throughout our second year clinical rotations with our preceptors!

In pathology, we work closely with the radiology department. Imaging can aid us in finding breast clips, orienting specimens, and much more. Today, we were very fortunate have members of Kubtec give a presentation on the importance of imaging in pathology and allow us to gain hands on experience working with some of their equipment!
